Company Description

The Union of Nova Scotia Indians is the umbrella organization for several other related companies that are involved in the environment industry. One of these companies, Mi'Kmaq Aboriginal Fisheries Services, is currently building a database to ascertain the health of various natural resources in the area. An integral component of this database is the creation of a Geographical Information System for the Bras d'Or Lakes and watershed.

Another company associated with the Union of Nova Scotia Indians is the Mi'Kmaq Fish and Wildlife Commission whose mandate is to undertake conservation activities that ensure that citizens have long-term access to traditional pursuits. Other initiatives includes programs to manage solid waste, forestry, water quality and testing, wastewater, and biomedical wastes.

One of the primary environmental activities that the Union of Nova Scotia Indians has undertaken is the Guardians of Natural Resources training program. In collaboration with the Bras d'Or institute (University College of Cape Breton), and Anna Steele (N.S.) Environment, the Union of Nova Scotia Indians has implemented a two-year post-secondary Natural Resource Management Technical Program. Along with the environmental activities advocated by the Union of Nova Scotia Indians, the training program encourages the building of sound relationships between native and non-native citizens. This promotes dialogue between parties and establishes methods to formulate sound environmental practices.

An important philosophical aspect of Mi'Kmak environmental practices is the notion of Netukulimk. In order to preserve, protect and promote the land and sea we live on, the Mi'Kmak believe that methods must be used that harvest resources without jeopardizing the integrity, diversity and productivity of the native environment.

Clients include governments and Aboriginal Peoples.
