Neale Staniszkis Doll Adams Architects

Neale Staniszkis Doll Adams Architects is a full service architectural firm based in Vancouer. Established in 1976, the medium-sized practice was founded on the principles of personalized service to our clients, a cooperative teamwork approach, a commitment to quality and to the effective delivery of our clients' projects. The firm has grown to a staff of twenty-one, comprising ten registered architects, six graduate architects and technologists and five support staff.

Neale Staniszkis Doll Adams Architects has developed an expertise in the design of long term care facilities that integrate intermediate care, extended care and special care Alzheimer's into one setting. The firm is responsible for the introduction of the innovative home concept in British Columbia in the early 1990's. The home concept constitutes a significant departure from the institutionalized model which has traditionally governed healthcare design, in which one typically finds double-loaded resident wings with centralized dining, lounges and activity areas. In contrast, the home concept rests on a decentralized model and attemtps to create several self-contained households or homes, each accommodating a small group of residents in a manner more in keeping with an extended family arrangement. Rather than locating daily activities such as eating, bathing and socializing in large and centralized spaces, each home has its own kitchen, bathing room, dining and living area, permitting residents in their daily lives to live among familiar faces in an emotionally supportive environment.

NSDA recognizes that the care of the frail elderly is a field that is constantly evolving, as such, we are involved in ongoing research into the design of care facilities, attending conferences and visiting leading edge facilities throughout Canada and the United States. NSDA is responsible for the introduction of many innovative design features for the frail elderly. Their healthcare work has been published both nationally and internationally and has been honoured with numerous awards including the 1998 Lieutenant Governor's Aware of Merit, the 1998 Canadian Wood Council Merit Award, the 1995 Lieutenant
Governor's Award of Merit and the 1990 Lieutenant Governor's Medal of Excellence.
