National Institute of Disability Management and Research

The National Institute of Disability Management and Research is committed to reducing the human, social and economic cost of disability to workers, employers and society through education, training and research.

Our focus is on workplace-based reintegration. Research shows that this is the most effective way of restoring and maintaining a worker's abilities, while reducing the economic cost of disability to workers, employers, government and insurance carriers.

The Institute is a labour - management initiative without precedent. Established in 1994 by the Disabled Workers Foundation of Canada,* the Institute now encompasses all of the Foundation's activities. The Institute's activities are supported by an endowment from major public and private Canadian organizations including employers, unions and the federal and provincial governments.

( * Originally the Disabled Forestry Workers Foundation)

Our Mandate

The Institute has four primary thrusts:
Education and Training
A wide range of programs and courses aimed at improving the capability of organizations to integrate workers with disabilities into the workplace are continuously being developed. They range from the six week university level disability management training program to one- to five-day introductory seminars and special interest workshops. The Institute designs courses for portability and will license other educational institutions to deliver the programs to enable access to training across Canada.

Research and Policy Development
The Institute has completed a variety of qualitative and quantitative research projects on topics related to disability management, return-to-work, policies, costs, etc., and participates in ongoing international research projects. This information is published and made available by the Institute, and is used to enhance both educational programs and product/service development.

REHADAT Canada
The Institute was awarded the exclusive rights to develop a Canadian version of the international REHADAT information system through a formal cooperation agreement with the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. Composed of 6 data bases (Disability Management Practices, Policy and Language, Case Studies, Assistive Devices, Research and Literature) this comprehensive electronic information resource provides a wide range of data for employers, unions, and healthcare practitioners that can be used in their daily work.

Workplace Program Implementation
Support products (i.e. text books, research reports, practical handbooks, policy and implementation manuals, videos, CD-ROMs, presentation packages), services and programs to assist Canadian workplaces to develop and implement disability management programs are available through the Institute.
