The Biotechnology Laboratory was established at The University of British Columbia in 1987. Its mandate was to develop fundamental scientific knowledge through the application of technology and to build an interface between basic and applied sciences. Since its creation, the Biotechnology Laboratory has developed extensive interactions with the biotechnology corporate sector. These achievements, and others, have led to the recognition that UBC is a national leader in this rapidly developing discipline. Dr. Michael Smith, Founding Director of the Biotechnology Laboratory, received the ultimate award for a scientist, the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The Biotechnology Laboratory currently numbers 12 full-time faculty, 1 adjunct faculty, 12 research associates and visiting professors, 23 post- doctoral fellows, and 51 graduate students. Dr. Phil Hieter is the Director.
Service Facilities The Biotechnology Laboratory has several state-of-the-art facilities to service the needs of the biotechnology research community. These facilities include the following:
Nucleic acid-Protein Service Unit (NAPS): A UBC service unit administered and operated by the Biotechnology Laboratory. It services academic and corporate research groups in the synthesis and analysis of nucleic acids and proteins.
Fermentation Pilot Plant: Provides universities and companies with large-scale quantities of micro-organisms and/or products of fermentation.
