Maxxam Analytics Inc.

Philip Analytical Services Corp. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Philip Services Corp., a publicly traded, integrated waste-management company with operations in Canada and the United States.

Philip Analytical is one of Canada's largest environmental laboratory networks and ranks in the top 10 in North America in revenues. The Philip network possesses a vast array of the latest analytical testing equipment. The major focus of Philip Analytical is environmental testing of organic and inorganic parameters in diverse sample matrices (solid wastes, effluents, receiving waters, ground waters, marine waters, soils, sediments, plants, animal and fish tissues, air emissions and air-borne particulates).

The laboratories are CAEAL accredited and/or EPA certified, and each offer a comprehensive QA/QC program.

All laboratories in the Philip Analytical network have a well established client base including consulting engineers, industry, private individuals, and all levels of government. All labs offer a comprehensive range of core testing procedures as well as specialized niche analysis areas. Through this network of collective capacity, experience, and capability, Philip Analytical is able complete environmental analytical projects of any size or complexity.

Philip Analytical in Halifax has worked on a number of major environmental projects including the Voisey's Bay and Hibernia environmental baseline surveys, the Irving Whale recovery operation and the Argentia Naval Base and Sydney Tar Ponds site evaluations.

The Halifax laboratory was established in 1990 and was the first commercial laboratory in Canada to use ICP/MS technology for the analysis of trace metals. The Rapid Chemical Analysis package (RCAp), a comprehensive water quality package (cations, anions, nutrients, pH, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved organic carbon, metals), was pioneered in Halifax. Highly automated instrumentation results in rapid turnaround times and high quality analyses at low cost.

Comprehensive organic analytical services include: petroleum hydrocarbons, oil and grease, volatile organic compounds by purge and trap GC/MS, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides and PCBs. The laboratory specializes in marine environment evaluations including: sediment particle size analysis, trace metals, nutrients, and organic contaminants in seawater, tissues and sediments.

Philip Analytical Services Corp. serves primarily Canada and the USA through major laboratory establishments and support laboratories.

Automated Robotic Rcap (rapid Chemical Analysis Package)
Philip Analytical Services Limited offers three packages for evaluating general water chemistry. These packages provide fast, reliable results at low cost and are widely used by engineering consultants, government, industry and the general public. The RCAp-30 is designed to analyse thirty standard water quality variables which, when viewed collectively, give a broad and complete inorganic profile of the water. The RCAp-50 provides the 30 standard variables and in addition provides a detailed analysis of trace metal concentrations. The RCAp-MS provides the same analytes as the RCAp-50 but with lower metal detection limits (comparable to more expensive graphite furnace atomic absorption methods). The RCAp is performed using 'state of the art' instrumentation and advanced robotics which ensures fast turnaround time and high quality analyses at low cost. The methods used are those defined by the American Public Health Association and/or the U.S. EPA.

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (icp-ms) Analysis
Philip Analytical Services provides ICP-MS services for the evaluation of trace metals in environmental samples. This method provides detection limits which are comparable to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS) while offering a complete scan of over 20 trace metals in a single cost-effective analysis. ICP-MS is an acronym for Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry. It refers to methodology for the detection of metals which utilizes an ICP as ion source and a mass spectrometer as detector. It may also be referred to as EPA Method 6020. Philip Analytical in Halifax was the first private laboratory in Canada to offer ICP-MS services.
