Markland Specialty Engineering Ltd.

Incorporated in 1967, Markland Specialty Engineering Ltd. Design
and manufacture state-of-the-art process controlinstrumentation
primarily for the water pollution control market. Markland ships
all over the world from their factory which is located close to
Toronto's Pearson International Airport. Markland have won
awards
and hold many patents for their instrumentation to monitor and
control the sludge/liquid interface in gravity settling tanks.
Markland are also one of the few manufacturers in the world who
make Suspended Solids Meters that measure sludge density using
ultrasonic attenuation which can operate in slurries that are
too
thick for optical Turbidimeters. Markland's patented DUCKBILL
style wastewater Samplers operate without mechanical moving
parts
for improved reliability and reduced maintenance. Technical
application engineering assistance is available no charge to
customers around the world via FAX. Please contact Markland for
sales engineering assistance.

Suspended Solids Meters
Marklands Series 502 Suspended Solids Meters use ultrasonic attenuation to measure the concentration of sludges and slurries that are too thick for optical methods. Non-hazardous ultrasound can replace nuclear type Suspended Solids Meters. An animated website (www.sludgecontrols.com) shows how the system works. This microprocessor-based instrument features: Automatic Push-button Calibration; Automatic Dynamic Damping; Advanced Self-Diagnostics; and is insensitive to color. The enclosure is NEMA-4X (IP67) and has an LCD readout; 4-20 ma output; two set-point relays; and a serial port. A 4-page brochure shows typical installations and contains a description of the principle of operation plus technical specifications for the various models.

Sludge Blanket Level Control/ Sludge Level Detector
Using no moving parts, Marklands #602 sludge Depth Meters monitor and control the settled sludge level in gravity Clarifiers, Lamellar inclined plate separators and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) Thickeners. The patented microprocessor based instrument can be used as a stand-alone system to fully automate desludging by turning the desludge pump ON and OFF. The meter can also act as an intelligent sensor for a central computer or PLC. The #602 has a 4-20ma output, LCD read-out, membrane switch front panel, two Relay outputs, RS-232 AND RS-485 serial ports, advanced self- diagnostics and error trapping; all in a NEMA-4X enclosure. Portable and fixed models are available.

Automatic Sampling System
Marklands Model 105 composite Sampler operates with no mechanical moving parts for reliability, low maintenance and low cost. Pneumatic Remote Sampler heads are available in aluminium, Stainless Steel or PVC. Air post-purge and 70 foot sample lift are standard. Samples can be CLOCK or FLOW PROPORTIONAL and an external connection is provided to activate the Sample from other instrumentation such as pH, conductivity, liquid level, etc. Originally designed to operate in Raw Sewage, the DUCKBILL Sampling System is ideal for heavily loaded industrial wastewaters.

Sludge Level Detector
Portable SLUDGE GUN quickly locates the sludge bed in clarifiers and settling tanks. A probe is lowered into the liquid and high intensity bursts of infrared light travel from an LED across the probe gap to a photo transistor, and a solid- state circuit differentiates between liquid or sludge in the gap. The circuit is designed to ignore solids suspended in the liquid and to continue on down looking for the real sludge bed. A loud variable pitch horn on the butt of the gun howls as the probe nears the sludge, and the pitch and volume of the sound increase as the probe passes through the cloud above the sludge and into the sludge bed. By carefully listening to the note, the operator can ignore the solids floating above the sludge and can determine the location of the true sludge level. Long battery life is assured by a state-of-the art pulsed circuit that has only a 1% duty cycle (OFF 99% of the time), plus a spring loaded trigger switch that turns the gun OFF as soon as the trigger is released. Pencell batteries will last one year in normal service. The sludge level is read from the numbered markers on the cable. Standard cable length is 10 meters (33 ft.) and extra cable is stored on a spool at the front of the gun. A thumb operated sensitivity control adjusts for thick or thin sludges. Aluminium and PVC construction is weather-proof and rugged; and the weight is 4 lbs. Fixed installations for automatic sludge blanket control are also available.
