The term security is often construed to mean the presence or addition of something or someone. In fact, security is defined as the absence of or freedom from (i. e. danger, harm, care, anxiety or doubt). Why is it then that when companies consider security they presume that it means the addition of resources? Perhaps it is because we have been conditioned to believe that by reacting to the symptom(s) we will eventually cure the illness. Large U. S. City Invests Millions to Upgrade Water Treatment Facility Security

Business Challenge Bioterrorist acts are now considered a major threat to our water supplies and the health of any countrys citizens. This large south-west city decided to proactively increase security at Wastewater Treatment Plants to set a national standard for physical security at these sites in advance of federal regulations. The city started with a test site and contracted EPA to complete a security risk assessment and high-level security system design.

How Our Staff Helped A complete prioritization of assets, followed by a threat analysis and the development of the existing security profile and gap analysis at the site. High-level design recommendations for fully integrated security management system aimed at reducing the identified vulnerabilities for physical security components such as Access Control, CCTV, Digital Video Management, and Perimeter Intrusion Detection, but also non-technical matters such as fence and gate design, CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design), lighting, and electrical and network matters. Addressed soft security concepts such as facility access procedures, visitor and contractor procedures, document management and control, key control, and security awareness training. Unique conceptual design with controller level intelligent integration to allow the city to utilize this system as the head end for the Water Services Department.
