Sales: $5.0 million

Edmonds Landscape and Construction Services Limited, Halifax, Nova Scotia, was established in 1965 and has since grown to become one of the largest companies of its kind in North America. Edmonds Environmental Services Division was established in 1989 and has distinguished itself as an industry leader in environmentally friendly technologies for land and water management. Edmonds practices and advocates The Natural Approach, an organic 'total system' method of environmental management. The company's motto is that concern for the environment starts in our own backyard. Edmonds provides its clients with a detailed environmental analysis and profile, along with a land management plan and the products and services necessary to manage their properties without chemicals or synthetics.

Over the past five years Edmonds has undertaken extensive research and development to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Total System approach to dealing with the environment. This macro approach to improving and sustaining our ecosystems incorporates the three pillars of sustainability - environment, economy and community - and has resulted in solutions which provide cost-effective alternatives to conventional land, water and organic waste management practices. The Total System Technologies developed by Edmonds include Total System Organic Management for turfs (TSOM), Total System Watershed Management (TSWM) and Total System Organic Recycling (TSOR).

In addition to developing and implementing environmentally friendly technologies, utilizing organic based products, and closing the loop on the organic waste stream, Edmonds has completely re-engineered its business management and practices to reduce consumption and increase productivity. Examples of these practices include changing to a fleet of smaller vehicles, establishing a Management Information System, which closely monitors all activity, and basing employee remuneration on performance and efficiency. In 1991, Edmonds was recognized for their efforts to improve their company practices and the environment by receiving the National Canada Award for Business Excellence in the environment category.

Edmonds Environmental Service currently serves more than 4,000 clients in the Halifax-Dartmouth Metro area and is working towards exporting its technologies and services to other parts of Canada.

Environmental Products And Services

Edmonds' Total System Organic Management (tsom) For Turfs.
Edmonds' Total System Organic Management (TSOM) technology provides a natural, safe alternative to property management that does not rely on the use of harmful synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This system is proven by scientific research and utilizes timely scientific monitoring and environmentally friendly inputs to promote the health of soils which in turn produce healthy plant material which is more resistant to pest infestation. TSOM has also proven to be very cost competitive when compared to chemical landscape management practices.

Edmonds' Total System Watershed Management (tswm).
Edmonds' Total System Watershed Management (TSWM) technology provides a community based educational and stewardship program to improve and protect water quality in developed watersheds. TSWM is a very dynamic technology that engages the community to control pollution at source. Once an environmental analysis has been completed on the state of the watershed, a tailor made remediation plan is formulated. The plan focuses on education and awareness, behavioral changes, testing and monitoring of the water to determine the impacts of the behavioral changes, and how the process can be sustained by the community itself. TSWM technology has proven that implementation of stewardship practices in a community can reduce pollution of developed watersheds by up to 80%.
