Ecological Management

ERIN Consulting has developed an approach to environmental
management that emphasizes ecological management as the primary
method to use in any environmental management strategy or
program. By reviewing projects on an ecological basis, broad
management requirements can be met that will ensure practical
environmental management. At the same time, specific issues
that need special attention can also be identified and given the
attention they deserve.

ERIN Consulting recognizes three key components of ecological
management: landscape ecology. industrial ecology and cultural
ecology.

Landscape Ecology

Landscape ecology recognizes the importance of the landscape in
environmental management. It focuses on the evaluation and
protection of enduring features in the environment. As well it
considers habitat for plants and animals, including humans, as
one of the key components for environmental management.
Landscape ecology emphasizes the aspects of the environment,
which are necessary to sustain its long term health and
survival.
It includes species in jeopardy as an important part of the
environment but de-emphasizes single species or single use
management.

Industrial Ecology

Industrial ecology is often referred to as the science of
sustainability. Industrial ecology attempts to manage the
environmental impacts of business and industry as if they where
ecological systems. The primary foci for industrial ecology is
in waste reduction or elimination, improved efficiency and
environmental quality management.

The tools of industrial ecology include: industrial metabolism
(which manages material flows), input-output analysis (which
manages energy flows), design for environment (which manages
environmental impacts pertaining to project design), life cycle
analysis (which manages environmental impacts during the life of
a product), and pollution prevention (which identifies ways to
prevent pollution).

Industrial ecology represents a consistent attempt to merge
environment and business priorities. By using business
management practices to evaluate environmental practices, it is
possible to find cost effective environmental solutions that can
be incorporated into business terms.

Cultural Ecology

Cultural ecology is the science that tries to understand the
relationship of people to the environment. This includes how
people use the environment and the impacts that the environment
has on them. An extension to this is the evaluation of the
impacts of development on people. The information and processes
used in cultural evaluation can range from public consultation
to interviews and data collection. One emerging area in
cultural ecology is the use of traditional knowledge in
environmental planning.

Information Management

Information management is one of the most important and often
over looked aspects of environmental management. At a time when
data and information requirements can be overwhelming we provide
a service to manage your data and develop information products
that our clients can use for their environmental management
needs.

The E.R.I.N. System

The E.R.I.N. system is a data warehouse system that allows for
the storage and retrieval of environmental data on all aspects
of environmental management. In addition to the data storage
function, the E.R.I.N. system also produces routine reports and
maps as information products for our clients internal and
external reporting requirements.

We can review client's information management requirements and
design information management systems for them. We review and
prepare data summaries for government reporting including
StatsCan and NPRI reporting. We have designed and implemented
the Environmental Resource Information Network (the E.R.I.N.
System) to manage data and information for our clients.

Other Environmental; Services
In addition to the ecological management approach outlined
above, ERIN Consulting is pleased to offer a range of
traditional environmental services including the following areas.

Environmental Policy

We can develop and monitor environmental policy for our clients.
We represent our client's positions on environmental matters to
government and the public.

Our staff expertise in environmental policy is extensive. We
have participated in numerous government stakeholder groups
including the Saskatchewan Clean Air Task Force, the
Saskatchewan Waste Dangerous Steering Committee, and the
Saskatchewan Contaminated Sites Liability Advisory Group. Staff
members were directly involved in the formation of the
Saskatchewan Petroleum Industry Government Advisory Committee
which we maintain the industry co-chair position. We have
developed policy positions for various clients and report
routinely on policy directions to various clients.

Environmental Management

We have developed expertise in the preparation and
implementation of environmental management systems and audits.
Our staff have conducted audits of environmental management
systems. We advise clients on issues pertaining to due
diligence including environmental compliance and liability. We
have done this type of work throughout western Canada and are
capable to undertake this work on an international basis.

Environmental Planning

We develop environmental impact statements from the initial
prescreening stages to the final preparation of the
environmental impact statement. We can prepare and coordinate
the public consultation processes associated with environmental
impact statements, as required. We are also experienced in the
area of municipal environmental planning.

We have prepared numerous environmental protection plans and
mitigation plans. We can prescreen developments for
environmental sensitivities. Our field monitors can and do work
with the construction crews to ensure that the mitigation plans
are being followed.

Waste Management

ERIN Consulting Ltd staff will assist clients in the management
of their waste streams. This service develops a full waste
management package from waste audits to monitoring. We can
ensure that clients are in compliance with regulatory
requirements and that clients' storage and disposal are handled
in such a way so as to minimize liability.

We currently facilitate and administer a waste management
cooperative for eight oil and gas companies in Saskatchewan.

Site Assessment

We conduct phase one and phase two site assessments. This
includes a review of historic record, archives and air photos.
We design and implement sampling programs in support of the site
assessments. These assessments can be used as the basis for
property transactions or as the basis for planning of site
remediation. We also remediate contaminated sites.

We have completed a number of phase one assessments some with
sampling programs included. We have provided our clients with
reasonable estimates of site liability for acquisition or
divestiture of their properties. We have also been part of a
team assessing a large industrial site for a risk based site
liability estimate. This study will include a detailed site
remediation plan.

Bioremediation

ERIN Consulting Ltd with our strategic alliance partner,
Environmental BioTechnologies, Inc. offers a complete
bioremediation service from design to implementation of
bioremediation programs. We are able to offer the design from a
biological perspective. This ensures that the programs will be
targeted at successful implementation of the bioremediation
plan.
Whether clients require in-situ methods, such as bioventing,
air sparging or bioslurping, or ex-situ methods such as land
farming, composting or bioreactors, we are able to effectively
design and implement the right program for the remediation at
hand.

We have conducted a number of bioremediation investigations and
implemented remediation programs. The material treated includes
crude oil, diesel fuel, heavy hydrocarbons and PAH's.

Wildlife Management

Our staff includes experienced wildlife ecologists and program
managers. We can develop traditional wildlife monitoring or use
our preferred ecosystem approach. This approach emphasizes the
assessment and monitoring of habitat. The basis for such work
is in the area of landscape ecology. This approach dovetails
with the ecosystem approach that is being used by government
biologists in the management of wildlife today.

Community and Government Relations

We can prepare complete consultation packages for projects.
These packages can be targeted at the community or government
agencies involved in the project. Our approach differs from
others in that we do not conduct public relations campaigns.
Instead, we advise clients of local community or government
issues and how to address these concerns. We encourage clients
to be open in their discussion and information exchanges with
the public and to listen and incorporate public suggestions in
their plans.

We have conducted industry consultation for input into
integrated resource management plans, supported industry and
government in consultation groups and participated as
stakeholder representatives on numerous government task forces.

Information Management

Information management is one of the most important and often
over looked aspects of environmental management. We can review
client's information management requirements and design
information management systems for them. We review and prepare
data summaries for government reporting including StatsCan and
NPRI reporting. We have designed and implemented the
Environmental Resource Information Network (the E.R.I.N. System)
to manage data and information for our clients.

Environmental Training

ERIN Consulting Ltd designs and offers a variety of
environmental courses. These courses are offered in conjunction
with the Energy Training Institute (ETI) a division of the
Southeast Regional College. Courses offered to date include
reclamation, waste management, and Saskatchewan regulations. In
addition ERIN Consulting Ltd can develop training courses
tailored to your corporate needs.
