Laidlaw was founded in 1959 with the purchase of Laidlaw Transport Ltd. - a regional truck transport business based in Hagersville, Ontario.
During the intervening decades, Laidlaw has diversified and grown by acquisition and internal expansion. A Canadian, publicly traded company since 1969, the Laidlaw organization today provides passenger transportation and environmental management services to customers in the public and private sectors. Its original trucking interests were sold in the mid-1980's.
Today, Laidlaw delivers its services from 790 locations distributed within 49 states and nine provinces throughout North America. In total, the organization employs 52,600 people.
At its fiscal year end August 31, 1994, revenues reached $2.128 Billion (U.S.), 75% of which was generated in the United States. Also, 59% of revenue was attributed to environmental management services; 41% was derived from passenger transportation operations. The company's shares are listed on the New York (LDW.A+B), Toronto, and Montral (LDM.A+B) stock exchanges.
