Canada Centre for Remote Sensing

Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) is a Federal Government organization, belonging to the Earth Sciences Sector of Natural Resources Canada. CCRS is responsible for science and its applications in the fields of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS).

CCRS s cooperation with Canadian RS and GIS industry has played a significant role in making the industry a world leader in the development of RS and GIS technologies and the design and manufacture of systems for their applications. From its beginnings in 1972, CCRS has also worked closely with the end users of RS and GIS. This partnership has contributed to the leading role of Canada in the operational applications of RS and GIS in natural resources management and environmental protection.

CCRS is well known internationally as a leading edge RS and GIS research and development centre. Its advisory services are requested by foreign governments and international organizations. This further enhances the visibility of Canadian RS and GIS excellence and often results in contracts for Canadian industry.

Examples of CCRS achievements are its contribution to the Radarsat program; formulation and implementation of GlobeSAR program for applications of Radarsat data products abroad; development of user-friendly RS databases, networks and effective data dissemination systems; technology transfer activities aimed at further strengthening of Canadian RS and GIS industry; development of new management tools based on integration of RS and other geomatics data; incorporation of artificial intelligence and expert systems for RS data analysis and modelling; and, last but not least, forging a partnership with stakeholders from industry and end-users to further strengthen the Canadian excellence in RS and GIS through development of new, more effective solutions for sustainable management of natural resources and environmental protection.
