Between The Lines Publishers

Mandate/Objectives

Between the Lines was founded in 1977 to provide critical
Canadian books on the 'left' of the political spectrum. It is
still one of the few Canadian houses with this particular
mandate. To date we have published 129 books and maintain 81
books in print. In recent years our mandate has expanded to
include producing high quality, visually striking books with
award winning designers (such as Jeff Jackson of Reactor, Gordon
Robertson and Linda Gustafson of Counterpunch).

Principal Accomplishments

Among our main accomplishments is to have survived for 21 years
(so far) in a tenuous political and cultural environment. We
have published many excellent and popular books during this time,
some of which have sold well for many years and are in continual
demand, like Case Critical, Educating for a Change and Getting
Started on Social Analysis. We have also developed a reputation
as a publisher of relevant and interesting works by Canadian
writers and activists: Queer Looks, ed. by John Greyson et al,
The Culture of Nature, by Alex Wilson, Wild Garden by dian
marino, The Mountie from Dime Novel to Disney by Michael Dawson
and Industrial Cathedrals of the North by Louie Palu and Charlie
Angus (which received special funding from the Visual Arts
section of the Canada Council).

Structure

Between the Lines is 100% Canadian-owned, currently a non-profit
corporation, without share capital and operates as a collective.
We are in the process of switching our corporate status to
for-profit, in order to be able to utilize the Ontario Book
Publishing Tax Credit. The non-profit company will hold the
single share in this company.

Brief History

Between the Lines was originally founded October 26, 1977 as a
joint venture between the Development Education Centre of Toronto
and Dumont Graphics of Kitchener. BTL has always operated as a
small house, with not more than three full-time staff.
