AA Environmental and Associates

AA Environmental (AAE) is a private Canadian company founded by Dr. Al Hashimi in 1989. Employing highly qualified and experienced professionals, AAE provides top quality engineering services to the corporate and public sectors. Under the direct supervision of Dr. Al Hashimi, interpretive and factual reports are submitted to our clients on a timely basis. The scope of our practice in the environmental field includes: research and investigation; detailed regulatory compliance review; laboratory design and training; project management; and, pragmatic assessment of remedial options. AAE holds a Certificate of Authorization from the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and is registered with the Ontario Ministry of Environment (OME).

Our interests include: Environmental impact assessment of energy-related and mining/milling operations. Studying the fate of different air-born contaminants, taking into account atmospheric chemistry and mechanical dispersion. Applications of athermal processes, e.g. membrane separations, in wastewater treatment. Developing in-situ soil remediation techniques, by considering innovative (bio) methods in contrast to throwing contaminated soil in somebody else's back yard, to encounter the NIMBY syndrome. Utilization of earthen liners for the confinement of solid wastes in landfills and repositories, taking into account the geochemical impact of leachate and the longevity of engineered liners.

Services Provided: Waste Characterization; Pathway and Risk Assessment/Analysis; Environmental Site Assessment/Auditing; Environmental Systems Management (ISO-14000); Quality Control/Assurance (ISO-9000/QS-9000); Waste Management/Minimization; Process Development and Optimization; Soil/Groundwater Remediation; Air Pollution Abatement; Site Decommissioning and Cleanup; Soil Vapour Extraction/Bioremediation; Expert Testimony in Public Hearings; Consulting, Seminars, and Training.

AAE Clients: Our clients include large industrial facilities, small companies, and environmentally- conscientious citizens. Repeat and referred business by these clients show that they highly appreciate AAE's unique services, professionalism, and true dedication to Environmental Quality Management.

At AA Environmental (AAE), we have addressed a host of environmental concerns. These ranged from responding to emergencies, through decommissioning industrial sites, to the assessment of real estate toxicity. Given the prohibitive costs for contaminated soil excavation, we recommend you to take our expert opinion regarding the environmental stand of the real estate you are purchasing or selling. Even if you are a property owner or a plant manager, our assessment report could protect you from a hefty future liability. This proves very supportive in establishing the 'due diligence' principle used by the Canadian courts.

The laboratories we deal with have high recognition in the field. We also ask each laboratory to write to us about the analytical methods, standards used, and the accuracy and precision of reported assays. Our experts interpret the submitted lab results, taking into accounts all these and other pertinent factors. Formal written reports will be prepared and sent to our clients, regarding the level of soil contamination (if any). The language used is extremely simplified, taking into consideration a layman reader. This constitutes the Phase II of ESA (Environmental Site Assessment).

AAE also specializes in soil remediation and clean-up. We recommend to our clients the most cost effective remedial procedures. Depending on the extent of contamination and the type of contaminants, the most appropriate option is selected. Whether a decision is made on soil removal, or in situ washing, or bioremediation, our technical personnel are well trained to implement the plan. At all these stages, we follow guidelines set by the MOE (Ministry of Environment ) and CSA (Canadian Standards Association).

Dispersion of contaminants from landfills and industrial dump sites may occur, resulting in soil contamination of underlying strata. Deposition of heavy particles from off gases of smelters, incinerators, or industrial facilities may cause the contamination of downwind surface soil. Precipitation absorbs dissolved gases and sometimes becomes acidic, resulting in the dissolution and mobilization of contaminants from the surface soil. Depending on the quantity of contaminated soil, land reclamation is usually costly due to high transportation costs. Alternatively, in-situ remediation, by washing and/or bio-germination, or other innovative techniques can be utilized. This depends on a number of site-specific parameters and the type of contaminants of concern. Geochemical processes are detrimental when infiltration interacts with buried solid wastes. Water/pyritic waste rocks often trigger acid generation. This results in contaminant mobilization and leachate progression, leading to soil contamination and surface/ground water pollution through run off/percolation pathways. Waste characterization followed by proper disposal is, therefore, a key factor in controlling soil contamination. Depending on the nature of interaction between contaminants and the soil, different soil remediation techniques can be implemented. Thermal stripping is often used for soils contaminated with hydrocarbons. Pump-and-treat method may be required to remove some inorganic contaminants.

Brown Fields Development
Abandoned industrial fields represent a freeze in a big portion of the national (real estate) wealth and often cause hefty environmental liabilities. Our solution is simple: 'Brown Fields Development.' By conducting Environmental Site Assessment (Phase l and ll), we can distinguish 'toxic' from 'nontoxic' real estate. As a result, not only the land will be recycled into the veins of economy but also smooth ownership transfers can be attained. Both the sellers and the buyers know their societal responsibilities towards environmental stewardship.
