PAMI is a knowledge-based applied research and development organization with a twenty year record of solving problems with and providing services for agriculture and industry. PAMI also provides sophisticated physical testing and regulatory compliance testing to manufacturers of agricultural, automotive, transportation, mining, forestry, and construction equipment. More recently PAMI has made significant strides in non-food fibre processing.
PAMI's multi-disciplinary team of engineers, technologists, and agronomists work in the following departments;

The Bio-blanket, A Barley Straw Covering Reduces Odor By 90%.
A significant increase in hog production on the Canadian Prairies in recent years has led to increasingly discontented neighbors and town residents because of the odor resulting from these operations.
Governments and hog producers first approached Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI) to help solve the manure storage odor problem in the early 1990's. After several years researching different covers, engineers and scientists discovered that barley straw, a durable and bio-degradable cover, effectively controlled odor for an entire season when properly applied.
The challenge quickly became one of developing a cost effective method for covering the storage areas. PAMI teamed up with Vonda, Saskatchewan manufacturer Hi-Line Industries to develop and manufacture the Top Gun, a straw applicator operated from the controls of a tractor cab.
The straw covering technology has become very popular on the Prairies in a relatively short time. About 40% of Saskatchewan producers use it, while one Manitoba municipality recently made the process a requirement for a company planning to build a large hog operation in the area. Users cite reduced tensions with neighbors and enhanced quality of life for themselves as the main benefits. Recent requests from food processors in the USA suggest a potential application for covering by-product holding ponds. PAMI is currently working on projects to determine environmentally safe application rates and methods of injecting manure into soil, for use as a fertilizer on crop producing land.
